Bart Ehrman vs. Michael Brown on Suffering

In my post on Saturday I discussed the issue of death and laid out briefly my view that this life is all there is.  That does not mean, however, that I think we should just party-hard since there is no life to come.  I have long been intrigued by the “problem of suffering,” and I have never, in fact, taken it to be just an intellectual problem.  I think as human beings we need to deal with suffering if we ...

Where Did the Trinity Come From? Video Lecture.

Here is the third of my three talks that I gave last year at Coral Gables Congregational Church in (suprise) Coral Gables, Florida, on my book, “How Jesus Became God.”   This lecture deals with one of the most important questions in Christian thinking:  where did the idea and doctrine of the Trinity come from?  Good question!  I try to answer it in this video.  Enjoy!

Bart Ehrman discusses the Apocalypticist

This is a very strange video!  One of the strangest I’ve ever been in.  To begin with, the title doesn’t make any sense (I’m not sure who called it this).  The word “apocalypticist” means “a person who holds to an apocalyptic world view.”  So who or what is “The apocalypticist”?  I’ve never heard someone being given that title (“THE” apocalypticist; as if there were just one??).  Maybe it means Jesus the Apocalypticist?  Maybe, but that’s not really what the clip ...

Progressive Spirit Interview

On March 27, 2016, I had an interview with John Shuck for the Progressive Spirit Podcast.  Progressive Spirit (formerly Religion For Life) is an exciting and intelligent program about Spirituality and Social Justice. The program is a production of KBOO Community Radio in Portland, Oregon. John interviewed me about his new book Jesus Before the Gospels: How the Earliest Christians Remembered, Changed, and Invented Their Stories of the Savior.  In the book as many of you know, I look at ...

My Debate with Richard Bauckham – Round 2

Here is round two (two out of two) of my debate with Richard J. Bauckham join on the radio show “Unbelievable,” a weekly program aired on UK Premier Christian Radio and hosted by Justin Brierley.  Richard was in the station’s London studio, I was on the phone.   Here we pursue other issues related to whether the Gospels of the NT represent distorted memories or if, for the most part, they can be trusted to be reliable because they are based ...
