Haven’t posted here in a while but now we have some interesting news from UFO land.
The June 7th Wall Street Journal included an article entitled ** you do not have permission to see this link ** and click on the linkedin link there at the beginning of the post for access.
The idea that the UFO phenomenon was itself a DOD disinformation campaign to hide Cold War secrets is not a new idea. It’s been my suspicion for years but now we have actual testimony from participants. The disturbing thing is that the campaign got so convoluted the Pentagon wound up lying to itself. This is way more fascinating than fantasies about little green men.
This article just came out but there is already some freaking out among the dedicated UFOnauts. The idea of a govt conspiracy is old hat to these people but the idea that they may actually be the ones being duped is a hard cup of joe to swallow. A follow-up article is promised and it all sounds like the makings of a good book. I would suggest the reporters investigate to see if any of the funding for the UFO groups active in the 50s & 60s came from shadowy govt agencies. Fox Mulder, where art thou?
Here is Part 2 of the article in the WSJ about UFOs. It is a shame with all the current events taking place that this story is not getting more comment. The UFO community is having a case of the vapors of course. I’ll look for interviews with the writers.

I’ve been fascinated by UFOs since I was a kid. Even after I’ve long since stopped believing in the presence of extraterrestrials on earth I remain fascinated by the phenomenon. Like religion it speaks to our deepest hopes and fears.
I’m astonished I stumbled on this one before Steefen.

My favorite unintentionally ironic comment in one of the videos –
It amazes me how our government thinks we are stupid.
I actually read earlier today about ** you do not have permission to see this link **
Well it has a Wiki so it must be true.
I do recall now there was a “missing witness” component to JFK assassination conspiracies.
More Dark Forces maneuvering and manipulating behind the scenes. I rather prefer author William Burroughs’ perceptions on the illusion of control.
We have a new type of rule now. Not one-man rule or rule of aristocracy or plutocracy, but of small groups elevated to positions of absolute power by random pressures and subject to political and economic factors that leave little room for decision.
They are representatives of abstract forces who have reached power through surrender of self. The iron-willed dictator is a thing of the past; there will be no more Stalins, no more Hitlers. The rulers of this most insecure of all worlds are rulers by accident; inept, frightened pilots with controls of vast machines they cannot understand, calling in experts telling them which buttons to push.

This seems the proper place for this, which I saw recently by Arkas.
I’d translate it as: Irrationality gives birth to self-confident monsters.
I love literal translations. They sometimes achieve a kind of obscure poetry.

Somehow Elmer Gantry seems relevant too.
Yep but unfortunately we have our own contemporary example of an "inept pilot".

They do indeed.
It brings to mind back in the early 90s reading a few compositions a friend of mine’s student had written, whose English was actually not that good, but there were times you’d think you’d really stumbled onto something.
That’s not actually such a bad translation of the introduction to the cartoon. I suppose you could also say biting or caustic.
By the way, only sometime after translating the caption in the cartoon did I remember Goya’s ** you do not have permission to see this link **

Podcaster Joe Rogan, one of the most powerful figures in US media, recently suggested – unhelpfully – that the disappearances could be to do with “plasma technology, whatever the fuck that is”.
I will say I’m disappointed that Joe settled for such a benign explanation. I mean, come on now, plasma technology? Isn’t it better for all concerned to suggest something more nefarious?
Sorry if this brushes up against politics but I think it is at least interesting that we have leaders who actually claim to believe in demons. (It’s sad to think the best we can hope for is that he’s simply pandering to his own hayseed constituency.) I think the first time I remember encountering this idea was in the writings of End Times prophet Hal Lindsey.

Follow-up to posts #43 & #44. Re: the WSJ articles providing evidence that the UFO phenom was a Pentagon disinformation campaign to hide Cold War secrets –
The Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Volume II, in production by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), was expected in “late 2025 or early 2026“. Oh well. It has been pushed back by at least a year. The excuse is that the timetable was affected by the Prez’s directive for all UFO/UAP related info to be published. (What, you expected the explanation to make sense?) The Pentagon has already verified some of the “disinfo” reporting and Vol 2 is expected to expand on those findings.
Volume I, released in March 2024, revealed no evidence of alien technology has been found. What a surprise!
I think that all we can hope for is that, at some point, a helluva good book will be forthcoming. The True Believers are beyond dissuasion and anything that disconfirms their previously held faith position will be assumed to be part of the “conspiracy”.

Indeed.
You would think they could save a lot of time if they stopped pretending to look at the evidence. but it obviously serves some function.

Their investigative strategy is predicated on a lack of evidence, although they give it lip service, since pseudoscience attempts to mirror the real thing.
Every formal investigation ever done has come to the same conclusion. The vast majority of reports are misidentifications of natural phenomena. There is a small minority that are outright hoaxes. And a small minority of cases where there is simply not enough evidence to make a determination one way or another. The UFO community lives (and dies) in this latter category. If you can’t disprove it, well then…
The conspiracy mindset assumes evidence exists but is being suppressed. Dark forces hiding in the shadows, etc. That’s why it is a pseudoscience. Because it is not subject to falsifiability. What is sad about all this is that this way of thinking could be cured by a basic course in logic given to Junior High School students instead of leaving it to them to figure it out for themselves. Of course such training would undermine most of our religion and most of our politics as well.
The UFO field is so very revealing although not in the manner its acolytes would prefer.

Real killjoys!

I will say educators have their work cut out for them.
The advent of the Internet, YouTube, mobile phones, and AI are just some of the many factors that seem antithetical to helping students obtain the critical thinking skills they need.
