Alexamenos graffito

There really isn’t much to say about this one, but it really intrigued me and I had to share. It’s called the “Alexamenos graffito” and is one of the earliest depictions of Jesus in history, albeit a mocking one. It’s been dated around 85 Ad – 200 AD. The Greek translates to “Alexamenos worships [his] God”. The graffiti depicts a man, presumably Alexamenos, worshiping a crucified figure. The figure has the head of a donkey or a horse which is believed by some to represent a Roman misconception that Jews and or early Christians worshiped some kind of donkey God. Alaxemenos may have gotten the last laugh, in the next room someone scribbled “Alexamenos the faithful” on another wall.
