6 out of 7 people are seeking God or are open to transcendence. It is no wonder that every opportunity is used to fulfill the desire to “touch” God and establish direct contact with Him. The phenomenon of interest in revelations is a sign of the desire to experience faith in a holistic, mysterious way. Man wants to see, touch and directly experience the supernatural reality. In the event of apparitions, piety meets a direct witness who saw, heard and talked. The news of Jesus Christ that the world heard at the end of the first century was met with pious enthusiasm. At last!
The writers responded to this enthusiasm by creating fictitious apostles in order to announce through their mouths: This we declare to you, what was from the beginning, what we have heard about the Word of life, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and what our hands have touched […] we declare to you what we have seen and heard, that you also may have fellowship with us (1Jn 1:1-3).
The dynamics of piety reveals the deeply hidden need in man to encounter the living God, and at the same time opposition to any ideologization of faith, the need to “feel” God’s closeness rather than to understand Him rationally. It is about a personal encounter with God who is life (John 1:4), not about understanding the “idea” of God. Hence, in matters of relations with the supernatural world, the logic of the heart is always more important than the logic of reason.
And this makes me feel terrible after 12 years when I unexpectedly reached the finish line in my research.
