Attack: You Are an Abomination and as the Muslims Do to Homosexuals, You Could Be Put to Death.

Lev. 18:22

‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.” (NASB)
“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” (ESV, NKJV)

Clearly, the Old Testament condemns homosexuality. What else does it mean when it says “you shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female”? The term “lie with” here refers to sexual intercourse in the phrase “lie with a male as one lies with a female.” It is an abomination. The word here is תֹּועֵבָה towʿebah, toʿebah.

117 occurrences; AV translates as “abomination” 113 times, “abominable thing” twice, and “abominable” twice. 1 a disgusting thing, abomination, abominable. 1a in ritual sense (of unclean food, idols, mixed marriages). 1b in ethical sense (of wickedness etc. ).1
Lev. 20:13

“If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.” (NASB)
“If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.” (ESV)

The word “detestable” is the same Hebrew word found in Lev. 18:22, “abomination.”

There can be no doubt that the Old Testament condemns homosexuality as a detestable act worthy of death.

Counterattack: Jesus Violated Leviticus 17: 10-11 with the Bread and Wine Metaphor

Any Israelite or any alien living among them who eats any blood—I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from his people.
…I have given the blood to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar…
Leviticus 17: 10-11

God’s face is set against Communion. The God of Moses sets His face against the Communion-taker. The God of Jesus sets His face against the Communion-taker. Who is willing to bet Jesus renounced God at the Last Supper?!

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. – Jesus at Matthew 5: 18

If Jesus kept this commitment until the day he died, he would not have made the Bread and Wine Metaphor.

I had to check out your link, to the website CARM. Yikes! They go on to “explain” the Old Testament condemnation of homosexuality by saying that “if homosexuality was allowed to run rampant,” it would threaten the coming of the promised Messiah, thereby making God a liar. So…they’re saying the intent of the ban on homosexuality was that without it, so many men would have been mating exclusively with other men that the Messiah couldn’t be born?  I can’t have any respect for the intelligence of the people at that website.

About the other matter…I’m not familiar enough with the Old Testament to be sure what practices would have been included under “eating blood.” But I don’t think we can know what Jesus actually said at his last meal with his disciples (whenever it was). Since the Gospel authors were Greek-speaking, probably from Gentile backgrounds, they may well have been unaware of that Old Testament prohibition.

This verse in Leviticus has been picked apart probably thousands of times.  I know for certain that the “as with a woman” part is an interpolation and doesn’t appear in the Hebrew.  I’m not sure why the phrase had to be added, the verse is clear enough on literal grounds without it.  I’ve read that Jewish scholars say that perhaps a better sense of the original Hebrew of the putting to death part is probably something like “it is better they should be put to death” rather than an exhortation to actually put them to death.  Ergo, the writer, appears to be projecting his feelings on the matter and not quite going so far as to call for their death.

The thing about the Bible is you can make it say what ever you want it to.  We’d be better off remembering that all of these laws from the OT that no one pays attention to unless it deals with homosexuality (when was the last time we stoned divorcees for committing adultery?) is that they were written for a nomadic/agrarian society that was probably made into a more cohesive society with most of the Mosaic laws.  By and large they have no place in modern society except for the obvious ones that every society recognizes (no murder, no lying, etc).

The Bible can be a dangerous tool.  Some Christian sects also believe that the only viable reason for divorce is adultery.  I actually read a post on a Christian website awhile ago that mentioned that the Bible doesn’t say anything about a woman being battered in a rship as a cause for divorce–so they advised the woman to check with her pastor before seeking a divorce as one shouldn’t put words in God’s mouth.  I know this post is about homosexuality, but this is how crazy some of the interpretations can get.  In re: to homosexuality in the Bible–some also believe that the biblical story of David and Jonathan was more than a bromance.
