I recently came across a few sources that argued for the existence of “Chrestianity,” which was supposedly the original form of the religion that Christianity grew out of. The ideological center of this movement was “Chrest,” not Christ, which I think they argue was an idea, not a person. I used Google to see if Bart had shared his thoughts on this theory but couldn’t find any commentary from him. Since he believes in the historical Jesus, I wonder how he thinks this theory holds up to other mythicist hypotheses.
