In my 20s I lived a few doors away from a chap called Simon Jenkins who ran a periodical called Ship of Fools. It had cartoon strips and features about the more extreme and pathetic aspects of Christian belief and behaviour. Simon was a convinced Christian. He said to me once that Christianity is not really a religion. This was the sort of thing people used to throw around in those days like ‘Jesus was the first hippy’ or ‘Jesus was the first communist’. But this particular statement stuck in my mind. Simon’s still going with Ship of Fools by the way. I checked the website and it has lots of fun stuff like Donald Trump being prayed over by a bunch of evangelicals so he can win a second term.
