Debate: Trump Versus Dr. Ehrman - Does Trump Know Enough about the Bible to Call It His Favorite Book?

Imagine such a debate.

Would Trump be able to answer those questions on the test Dr. Ehrman gives his students that first day of class? (How many books in the NT, Paul’s last name, the original language of the NT etc.)

Is there a better way to advertise/promote CIA? What about articles in such major papers as The Atlantic, NY Times, WSJ? What are ideas for articles that would be of general interest?

Can we pool ideas of ways for increasing the membership of the blog and how to make it happen?

I doubt Trump would pass that test, but then what Pol would? Hillary?  Does we expect more from Bernie?

Appreciate your considering my new topic – meant to grab attention for the purpose of getting ideas to increase the blog membership – worthy of a thoughtful reply! But then you might simply have an affinity for lost causes.

In truth I would not have been able to answer those questions either and that after many years of attending church, Sunday and Bible schools and Bible study classes. It’s interesting how much can be learned here and not just from Dr. Ehrman.

While at it though, would you or whoever else reading this tell me if it would be dishonest to write once again to Terry Gross (Fresh Air) and let her know there are five thousand of us CIA bloggers eager for her to schedule Dr. Ehrman?

Nothing wrong with that J, but if you are going to try and drum up membership, you might want to get Prof Ehrman’s ok on what approach you take. Not sure he would want membership derived from a  articlse declaring that Trump would do on his Baby NT exam: Bernie Does Better Than Trump on Ehrman’s Bible Exam. Story on page 3. In other news Prince was killed by radio waves from Venus.

Spiker, You are a delight to me!

Yes, I will not do anything without Dr. Ehrman’s permission first but he knows I tried to get everyone on the blog to write Terry Gross and Steven Colbert with the result that there were maybe THREE who complied. 🙂

Others here who know about similar blogs may not consider this one all that great. This is my only one. To me it is superbly fantastic and my goal is to find a way to let everyone know about it, especially the Christian community. Then maybe there would be less judgmentalism.

Yes, I think this blog is very good. Interesting and thought provoking.

The judgemental issue is another animal I am afraid. Gay’s can’t get married (causing one town clerk the vapors) while not a word about divorce. My suspicion is this often comes from the pulpit which is all too glad to be putting fannies in the seats and less interested in 1.) knowing what they are talking about and 2.) being consistent. If Christians view homosexual marriage as a sin; an immoral act, it’s instructive that there aren’t other moral road blocks to getting married (divorce, spousal or child abuse, financial impropriety etc. 3 of course ppl want to feel they are fighting the good fight against the forces of darkness. And that Trumps (a pun?) any other consideration.

Spiker:

The judgemental issue is another animal I am afraid.

Please do not think of me as majoring in minors here but judgments are not what I was speaking of. I used judgmentalism in the broad sense of the word having to do with thinking there is only one way of believing in and worshiping Jesus. Dr. Ehrman’s blog, books and debates make it clear there have been many ways of believing FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. It’s no wonder there are now endless varieties of Christians from Quakers to Episcopalian and we all are so caught up in thinking ours is THE way. I was the same. In our church people quietly walk in, kneel in prayer and spend time until the service preparing themselves for worship. Not in other churches! In those, the time before the service is a kind of social time of running around speaking to one another. It seems to disregard God’s presence and my sense then was that they did not know the proper way of attending a church. Then some of my family members think only the Baptists know how to baptize. These are just two examples of what I am trying to explain. I think Dr. Ehrman helps us understand no one can really know anything for sure. We simply must believe as we believe (or not believe at all) and allow others to do likewise without seeing ourselves as being right and everyone else wrong. (Spiker, I’m just hoping this isn’t going to turn out to be like those cookies on the stove explanation.)

By the way,  how do you end up with the quote in the ‘box’ and the response out of the ‘box’?

Cookies!? Me want cookie!, Me eat cookie!” Om nom nom nom

how do you end up with the quote in the ‘box’ and the response out of the ‘box’?

yea that’s a bit goofie. Usually I will highlight what i am quoting and select the  ”  sign in the tool bar. Getting out is a bit tricky sometimes. Most of the time I’ll hit enter twice which will make two more boxes, but when I backspace to delete them, i end up outside the box. Sometimes double clicking inside the box works. Maybe the easiest way is to write out your post before adding the box, then select the quote, highlight it. BUT make sure your other text, your comment,  is a few lines further down when you highlight and select  ” the quote.  You can fix that after the box is created by simply deleting the extra space.

Thanks, Spiker. I’ll work on it!

And as George Bernard Shaw said: “A man learns to skate by staggering about making a fool of himself; indeed, he progresses in all things by making a fool of himself.”

Even learning to format here on The Forum (if indeed format is even the right term for it) takes a kind of courage that makes help very much appreciated.

And look! I did the boxes right again!

Hahahahaha!  I had trouble finding that one too!  That man is such an obvious joke.  I simply don’t understand how any Christian, regardless of their political leanings, could buy into anything Trump says.

“Two Corinthians 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame. … Is that the one you like?”

What a joke!

(Sorry for responding to such an old post.  I’m new to the site and have been exploring old posts).

Does Trump know enough about the Bible to call it his favorite book?

Look at the actions of his orders and the actions of his administration.

Does Trump, his administration, his country, and its citizens know enough about the Bible to call it our favorite book?
