The Apocalypse is surely one of the most psychotic works of imagination in all world literature.

Not when you realize it is not the expression of a warped psychology but a work of literary craftsmanship using a genre with very specific criteria.  You mustn’t think of it as a record of an actual vision.  Apocalyptic literature should be read the way we read a comic book.  Simple plot with big and bold fantastic imagery. 

On the other hand in the notes to his new translation/commentary of the book of Ezekiel, Hebrew scholar Robert Alter speculates that Ezekiel may have been mentally ill. 

It’s a damn shame that the Book of Enoch wasn’t included in the canon in the West.   Think how much funkier End Times prophecy would be! Judging by the critical apparatus focused on the work it might as  well be.
