Athena goddess of Athens.
Dionysus god of Thebes.
Apollo god of Socrates
Hermes

vs

Jupiter god of Rome
Mars god of war in Rome
Saturn
Sol Invictus
Serapis associated with Emperor Vespasian
Venus
Mercury

vs the God of Moses, Jacob/Israel, King Saul, and Jesus
a god who let his son die, who let his temple get destroyed, and who gave his Holy City to the Gentiles [Romans]

Saturn (Latin: Sāturnus [saːˈtʊrnʊs]) was a god in ancient Roman religion, and a character in Roman mythology. He was described as a god of time, generation, dissolution, abundance, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal and liberation.

Sol Invictus was the Roman god of the sun. He likely originated as a combination of Sol Indiges, the ancient Roman sun god, and the Syrian sun god Elagabalus. While worship of Sol Invictus (whose name meant the “Unconquered Sun”) started in about 100 CE, it would take another century before he rose to prominence.

Maris (or Mariś) was an Etruscan god often depicted as an infant or child and given many epithets, including Mariś Halna, Mariś Husrnana (“Maris the Child”), and Mariś Isminthians. He was the son of Hercle, the Etruscan equivalent of Heracles.

Did the God of Moses/King Saul/Jesus present the depth of theology that the gods of Greece and Roman present?

Amen/Amun: The Hidden One
Amen-Ra: adding the sun God
Aten the power behind the sun
Helios, in Ancient Greece, the god personifying the Sun (whereas Apollo is a god of sunlight and mental illumination, arts, music, prophecy)

Then Jesus became god or just Lord.
1) God 2) St. Michael 3) Enoch/Son of Man/Jesus

Monotheism of The Aten vs Monotheism of the god of Moses/King Saul/Jesus.

So, let the state of civilization testify of the greatness of the theology.

The rival of the Roman Empire was Parthia whose god was Mithra operating under Ahura Mazda.

But, for this discussion: Ancient Greece vs Ancient Rome and is it right for believers in a local/tribal god, in the late 20s/early 30s, to reject the culture of Ancient Greece, and the patronage and culture of the Roman Empire?

If Ancient Rome, incorporating Ancient Greece, was the greatest civilization at that time, and if the god of Moses, Jacob/Israel, King Saul, and Jesus did not put Judea in the running why revolt against Rome while other client kingdoms were cooperative with their patron empire?

Not once does Jesus mention or validate the Book of Enoch (and it was popular during his day).
To me, that says a great deal right there.

Greece has more authors than Rome.
Greece has more philosophers than Rome.
Rome had better engineers.
Rome had the better military.

Was Pericles better than Julius Caesar?
Was Pericles better than Augustus Caesar?
Was Alexander the Great better than Julius Caesar?

Google, who was better, Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome?

For the development of human civilisation, Greece, without question. Rome added very little. The Roman Empire was of course larger and stronger than either Classical Greece and the Hellenic Empire. And was usually unified whereas they were diverse.Jun 25, 2017

Brian Overland:

It is very tempting to say “Greece,” because you can compare the idealism of the Olympic Games to the savagery of Gladitorial combat. But that is looking at only one aspect of the civilizations. We should remember that ancient Greece included Sparta as well as Athens. In the end, then, even although I am tempted to say Greece, the wisest call is really a split decision.

Classical Greece and Rome excelled in such different ways, that this is a classic “apples to oranges” comparison. They are simply too different in their strengths.

Greece was by far the more creative and original of the two civilizations. They created entirely new branches of knowledge and laid down its basic foundations. They literally invented logic. Drama. Democracy. The jury system. Epic poetry. Tragedy and comedy. And even the basic axioms of mathematics, not to mention the system of proofs — now considered the essence of mathematical research today.

Compared to the Greeks, the Romans were largely unoriginal imitators in the creative arts. The best you can say about the Romans, when it comes to intellcutual pursuits, is they had the good sense to appreciate what the Greeks did and write intelligent commenatries on it.

But the Romans far excelled the Greeks at administrating and ruling large empires. They knew how to keep the peace throughout the known world. They were superb organizers and managers. They didn’t make the same mistake that ancient Athens did, which was to try to expand their empire too quickly. Instead, they built on victory after victory, slowly accumulating through centuries, until no one was left to stand in their way.

Roman law was supremely effective, so much so, that even after thousands of years, there are some concepts of Roman law in use even today. And this is (in part) why Latin is the language of so many legal terms.

You might say that the Greeks supplied the head and the heart of the classical spirit… but the Romans provided the bones, muscles, sinews, arms, legs, and lungs… in short, Rome became the body through which the spirit of Greece was transported to Europe, North Africa, and the Near East.

The importance of both Greece and Rome is well reflected in the history of Christianity….

Greek-speaking people were the first non-Jewish converts to the new religion (Christianity), which is why the New Testament is written in Greek… thus making the Christian religion a largely Greek one, at least in its abstract concepts of God as an eternal Being beyond space and time.

But the organization of the Church, in time, was of course taken over by the Bishop of Rome. And the organization of the Church became Roman througout the majority of Christendom.

Sociology of Religion

Self image with respect to the sacredness or the social functionalism of either one.

– – – – –

The religion of the Greeks and of the Romans is the same religion , with Greek the mother and Roman the daughter. One would be mistaken to regard Romulus as the father of the religion of the Romans. He brought it from Alba and Alba had received it from the Greeks. Critics who contest the coming of Aeneas to Italy do not deny that even before the Trojan War, the Arcadians under Oenotrus, the Palantines under Evander, and the Pelagians came with their gods into Italy. Thus without having recourse to Aeneas, Greek religion found its birth in Rome. Remus and Romulus, shortly before laying the first stone, celebrated the Lupercal according to the custom of Arcadia and the institution of Evander, and when the city received its citizens, Romulus began with the cult of the gods, he consecrated temples, raised altars, established festivals and sacrifices, by taking from Greek religion everything that was best in it.

The God of Moses did not move the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt’s zone of influence.
Historical King Saul was Labayu.
He wrote: I fall at the feet of my king, my lord, my Sun 7 time and 7 times.
Labayu’s king was a New Kingdom pharaoh who’s monotheistic god was the Aten.

As for King David, the 23rd Psalm’s subject matter is an amduat and it references the god, Osiris, which brings us out of Aten monotheism since Osiris and the Aten are separate Ancient Egyptian gods.

Well, that leaves the God of Jacob/Israel (and his son, Joseph, God of Joseph)and the apocalyptic God of Daniel and Jesus.

Steefen
Write off God of Jacob/Israel and Joseph as tribal god.
Write off the apocalyptic God of Daniel and Jesus as a failed hypothesis with Jesus stealing the concept of Son of Man from the books of Enoch.

If you go with the God of Jesus in the gospel of John, that is Hellenistic with

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Ask Philo of Alexandria.
