I have a thought exercise for you.
The traditional Roman religion was famously flexible, incorporating the religious traditions of conquered territories. I’m wondering: if a pagan Roman emperor had seen Christianity’s triumph coming, could he have successfully merged the two faiths?
In particular, I’m wondering if this could have been accomplished by propping up Arianism. If there was agreement on one almighty God (perhaps Sol Invictus from the pagan perspective), Jesus and Caesar alike might be recognized as lesser divine beings whose godliness was bestowed upon them by this ultimate creator.
Obviously there would be extreme resistance to this from many Christians. Perhaps 256 is already too late, and Christianity already too entrenched, to accomplish what I’m describing. If that’s the case, what about the second century?
Interested in your thoughts!
