I’d love to know what books you recommend reading by critical biblical scholars. If you could give the title, author, and a sentence or two on what it’s about, that’d be great!

I am not extensively read, but I recommend The Synoptic Problem: A Way Through The Maze by Marc Goodacre

** you do not have permission to see this link **

Otherwise, I have mostly read Dr. Ehrman’s books on these subjects, so enjoyed the perspective of someone who argues that Luke used Matthew (& Mark) and rejects the existence of Q.

I also read The Canon Of The New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance by Bruce Metzger.

Looking forward to seeing other recommendations.

I read Jewish Literacy in Roman Palestine by Catherine Heszer and it was really good.

Judaism by E.P. Sanders is great to understanding Jewish culture and practices from 63 BCE to 66 CE.

Well for critical editions of the Bible in their ancient languages, my favorites (and a few standards used in scholarship) are:

Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia
Septuaginta
Novum Testamentum Graece Nestle-Aland
Novum Testamentum Graece United Bible Society (UBS)
Biblia Sacra Vulgata
Syriac New Testament and Psalms-FL UBS

For scholarly works:

“How Jesus Became God”, “Misquoting Jesus”, and “Forged” are all my favorites from Dr. Ehrman
“Ugaritic Narrative Poetry” – Simon Parker, editor
“Eerdman’s Dictionary of the Bible” which has articles from both Bart Ehrman and my mentor Anthony J. Tomasino
“Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible” – Emmanuel Tov
“God in Translation” – Mark S. Smith
“The Dead Sea Scrolls” – Michael Wise
“The Oxford History of the Biblical World” – Michael Coogan, editor
“Job: Introduction, Translation, Notes” – Marvin H. Pope

For Bible translations and studies:

The New Oxford Annotated Bible – Oxford
NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible (my mentor did the commentary work on Esther there) – Zondervan
NASB Study Bible – Zondervan

I’ve got several bookshelves full of stuff. My current focus is the Book of Job, hence a lot of my favorites are OT and ANE related work.
