There are some who claim the Hebrew bible and the New Testament are not misogynistic, and that such ideas are the result of mistranslations or incorrect interpretations of the text. Having read the entire bible multiple times, seeing multiple modern translations, and reading passage after passage that suggest male superiority, I can’t image anyone concluding it does not, in general, portray women as inferior and even the property of men in some cases. Nevertheless, an example of the contrary view is the book Not So Among You by Kathy Devore, in which she takes the position the bible is not misogynistic, supposedly consulting scholars in ancient languages to back up the argument.
Have you encountered this argument? Do you think it’s sound, or just another attempt to square one’s cherished beliefs with modern ethics and gender value equality? For those who have studied ancient Hebrew, or Greek, etc., can you attest whether such a claim of mistranslation has any merit? Can you provide definite cases where, in the original Hebrew or Greek, there are obvious statements or portrayals of male superiority or female subjugation?
