I realize that critical scholars date Daniel to 2nd century BCE, and I know all the arguments…
But of course evangelical scholars believe Daniel was an actual 6th century character, and he wrote in the 6th century. For the most part I don’t find their arguments convincing…but many scholars have argue that the Aramaic in Daniel is Imperial Aramaic, which belongs to a period no later than about 300 BCE. And I can’t really find arguments from scholars who disagree with their findings.
I know that there are (critical) scholars who agree with the Imperial Aramaic argument, yet they still hold to a late dating for Daniel…but the arguments seem kind of convoluted to me.
Is anyone familiar with this argument for an early Daniel? If so are you aware of the critiques? Have you read arguments of scholars who make a good case challenging the findings of the evangelical scholars?
Here is a link on the subject which you may have already seen. I would point out that a mention of an Uruk incantation dated to Hellenistic times but written in Imperial Aramaic. So writing in Imperial Aramaic in Hellenistic times was not unheard of. ** you do not have permission to see this link **
