
How well is circumcision attested in the OT? How ancient can it be if it is spoken of in the NT more than the Old?

Take into account that the writings of the D history:
Samuel and 2 Samuel are talking about the Philistine’s foreskins David laid at the feet of Saul,
Jeremiah is talking about circumcising the heart (still an indication that circumcision was an important rite).
It seems to only be mentioned by D and the writer(s) of the Torah.
Was it ever controversial before the Hellenistic age? I can see the controversy becoming more focused in light of the naked Greek gymnasiums. At any rate, their seems to more focus on the rite by NT authors than by OT authors.
