It seems Isaiah is thought to be written in at least two parts … Chapters 1-39 and Chapters 40-66.  Evangelicals are stating that Trump is a type of Cyrus being God ordained to save the United States.  If you take the book as unitary then it appears the prophecy that Cyrus would allow the temple to rebuilt was made 100 years or so in advance.  If Chapters 40-66 were a later addition, do we have a suspected date?  Is the date proposed a reaction to Cyrus the Great being mentioned as King of Assyria?

I am not a bible scholar and I am really not an Old Testament scholar. Dr. Ehrman subscribes to the idea that there are 3 primary sources for Isaiah.

First Isaiah – Chapters 1 – 39 (with some exceptions) written in the eighth century

Second Isaiah – Chapters 40 – 55 middle of the sixth century

Third Isaiah – Chapters 56 – 66 appears to be written after the exiles had returned from Babylon.

This is from The Bible: A Historical and Literary Introduction by Dr. Ehrman.

I think Truman may be a better candidate for modern-day Cyrus than Trump. Moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem isn’t exactly as important as playing a key role in allowing the Jews to return to Palestine and establish Israel after the Holocaust. But I’m not ready to do what the Bible does for Cyrus with either of these worthies — refer to them as “my anointed” [my messiah].

I’ve been floating the idea that Trump might be the antichrist among my fundamentalist family members.  After all Trump is very popular with evangelicals and remember Matthew 24:24!

I think I should probably take this opportunity to revert the wisdom about never discussing politics on a religion forum. But I admit it’s hard to avoid when the Book of Revelation itself identifies various beasts, whores and kings and hints at their identities so tantalizingly. As for me, I think it was Nero, and the tradition of trying to figure out who it is in every generation has led to a whole lot of mischief. Not to mention that the “anti-Christ” never appears in the book, and where it does appear in the NT, it refers to people who deny that Jesus had a physical body [Docetists[.

Well Robert I guess that proves it!  After all you did the math!

Fear not fefferdan my suggestion is strictly tongue in cheek, an attempt to penetrate the wall (sorry) of credulity that separates my family members from reality.  A chink in the armor, as Prof Ehrman says.

Sorry, fefferdan, I couldn’t help myself!

And I suppose his bankruptcies could be the beast’s mortal wound which healed itself.
