Egypt and Syria were ruled by dynasties founded by the chiefs of Alexander the Great – Ptolemaios and Seleucos. Judea belonged to the Seleucid dynasty. There was an anti-Seleucid uprising in Jerusalem with the support of the Ptolemy. The Maccabees were written in Greek
