I hate to be the one victim of a crazy conspiracy theory, but I bring this up because I recently saw a BBC documentary where this theory was clearly put forward as, if not the truth of what happened to the historical Jesus, certainly a reasonable possibility.
In case you don’t know what I am talking about, the BBC Documentary –Did Jesus Die (2011) presents the case that Jesus did survive the crucifixion (he was up there only 6 hrs and typically people endured for days), had to escape (obviously) and ended up in Kashmir (Northern India) a distance of about 5000 kilometers, where he preached and ultimately died at the ripe age of about 80. There is a tomb with an inscription of the Jewish man who called himself “Issan” where his feet are shown with the scars of the nail of the cross.
This is not a new story. I remember a book back in 1984 by Andreas Faber-Kaiser which made the same claim, and it looks like this particular conspiracy theory goes back even further. Mr. Faber-Kaiser has other work which tends to suggest he likes “out-of-the-mainstream” theories (extra-terrestrials and such..). If this somehow were true, I would think it would be pretty important to Christians.
Has anyone really looked into this? Is this work the only one available on this subject? Is it crazy to think Jesus could have survived a 6 hrs crucifixion, revived after being cared for, had to flee not to be caught again, and ended up in the east somewhere?
Thanks.

I just watched the BBC documentary, I think you need increase the sensitivity of your BS detector. The documentary engages in a lot of speculation based on “there are traditions that …” The part about Jesus being in India is based on “The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ” by Nicholas Notovitch. My BS detector immediately went off at the idea that a Buddhist monastery had a manuscript dealing with Christ in Kashmir. If that were true, it would be more famous than the Dead Sea Scrolls. Professor Ehrman discusses how this book is a forgery in his book Forged (pages 252-54).
