I had a Q on the Jordan River I was hoping someone more familiar with Israel’s geography and history could help me with. I haven’t been able to find the answer just googling around the internet.
Was it possible to travel by boat from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea in Jesus’s day? I’m curious if people in Biblical times used the Jordan to move people and trade goods, as I suspect it would have been quicker than land travel and safer from bandits. Jesus’s first disciples were fishermen so he would have had access to boats. But I haven’t found a source yet that explains whether the Jordan River is wide and deep enough for such travel, or whether it has rapids, drop offs, shallows, etc. that would block boats from moving up or down river. I’m also curious if the valley it sits in would have been too wide and barren to interest people in river commerce back then. Also, the Bible describes people crossing the Jordan, and important events like Jesus’s baptism happening at the Jordan, but I’m not aware of any Biblical references to people traveling on the Jordan by boat.
Thanks for any info!
