I was looking at a youtube comments section on a video related to the old “did Jesus really exist” topic. It’s a terrible video (from the normally more considered Sci-Man Dan), however, in the comments section I saw a claim that “Pliate was a fastidious keeper of execution records and had no record of Jesus”, this elicited the response agreeing with the records’ existence but “there was a reference to Jeshua Bar Joseph”. I assume that neither claim is true, but has anyone any idea where it even came from?

Judging by the comments to that video, and the actual video itself, I’d be willing to bet my house that it was made up out of whole clothe.

I have little doubt that Pilate’s staff made and kept detailed records, including of executions. I also doubt that any of them have survived, and certainly not as a complete archive that could substantiate the claim made above. (There might be forgeries, although one would think that such forgeries would include the name of Jesus as the main selling point, unless the forgeries were created to dispute the existence of Jesus.) My admittedly limited understanding is that there are very few surviving references to Pilate, let alone documents of his time in office.
