Wars and Antiquities by Josephus Speak of an Egyptian Prophet at the Mount of Olives

Steefen
During the time when Antonius Felix was procurator of Judea (52-60 CE), there was an Egyptian prophet in Judea.

Lena Einhorn
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet had previously lingered in the wilderness or desert (eremia, in Greek).
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet had lived in Egypt.
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet spoke of tearing down the walls of Jerusalem.
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet is described as a messianic leader with a great following.
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet is perceived as a major thread by the authorities.
Like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet seems to have been betrayed—at least the authorities were informed beforehand about his plans.
[On the Mount of Olives, like Jesus, the Egyptian prophet declared his prophecies and there, both had their missions end: the Egyptian prophet was defeated and Jesus was arrested..]

The Egyptian ran away when his army was defeated.

Why would anyone base their story of a messiah on him?

My response to all the mythicists: in the end isn’t the explanation of a historical Jesus just simpler than all these ad hoc conjectures and tortured explanations?  How many times do you have to rationalize a passage into something  other than its most   straightforward  reading before you just throw up your hands and give it up?

There  was  this  guy,  see…

Of course he wasn’t what you were taught in Sunday School.   It’s even more interesting!

If one does not study history, one can follow in the footsteps of Lee Strobel.
Second, if one does not study history, one misses context and references.

Matthew 2

13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”

14So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,

15where he stayed until the death of Herod (4 BCE). This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Dear Dr. Ehrman,

When searching your posts for “When was Jesus born?” and “Jesus’s birth,” I found:

** you do not have permission to see this link **

Matthew 2: 15 says Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were in Egypt until the death of Herod [4 BCE]. My question is, was Jesus born in 6 BCE, giving him only two years in Egypt, which he would hardly remember? Even if you hold that they did not go to Egypt, what is your scholarly opinion about the year of Jesus’s birth?

Thank you,
Steefen

In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus
that the whole world should be enrolled.
This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius
was governor of Syria.
   … Mary was with child.
Luke 2: 1-2, 5

When was Quirinius governor of Syria?

After the banishment of the ethnarch Herod Archelaus from the tetrarchy of Judea in AD 6, Quirinius was appointed legate governor of Syria, to which the province of Judaea had been added for the purpose of a census.

Result:
Matthew says Jesus was born no later than 4 BCE.

Luke says Jesus was born no sooner than 6 CE.

But the Egyptian himself escaped out of the fight, but he did not appear any more.

According to Acts 1:9–12. Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives, but he did not appear any more.
