Hi,

I am new member, my background is Moslem. Understanding Historical Jesus is one of my interest, since he is one of our Great Prophet and will fulfill his Messianic task in the end of times.

I have questions regarding empty tomb event:

1. What is the motive for people to come to the tomb? is that common from Jewish tradition perspective at that time that people come to inspect Tomb? Someone who already buried, why we should check the tomb again, for what purpose?

2. If let say, people come to the tomb as prophecy about ‘Sign of Jonah”, “3 days 3 night”, i think it is to earlier, they should come Sunday night instead. What do you think?

Thanks!

Hello

I’m not a scholar but I will provide what information I have.

1. Because of the suddenness of Jesus’ burial and the circumstances, he was not buried in the Jewish ritual manner.  The women came to the tomb to ritually anoint the body and prepare it in the Jewish ritual manner. They couldn’t come on the Sabbath (Saturday) so they had to wait until the next day.

2. In the Jewish reckoning of time the day began in the evening and a part of a day is considered a whole day.  Jesus was crucified on Friday during the day.  The next day began that evening (Saturday the Sabbath).  The third day (Sunday) began the next evening.   There is still some scholarly discussion about the interval.

Hope that helps.  Welcome to the blog.

That holds for the synoptic gospels. In gJohn Joseph and Nicodemus performs the ritual preparation of the body, and the purpose of Mary’s visit  Sunday morning is unspecified. She’s just mourning him.

True.  Which leads us back to the perennial questions, never I suppose to be definitively answered.  Did John know the synoptics?  Did he take their tradition and deliberately alter it to fit his own purposes, or did he have a separate and varied tradition of his own?
