I saw this on Book Bub It is by Phillip Comtort and I thought it would be a good read. This seems to be nothing but a clever apologetic attempt disguised as research.  Anyone else ran across this?  I returned the book for refund.  When an author start talking about the “word of God” etc. I know it is not unbiased. His bibliography has a lot of conservative scholars.  Apparently this book was his PhD thesis.

I’ve never heard of it, but I’m the same way.  When I see anything religious my interest shuts down.  All I can say is to always do your research on a scholar you’ve never heard of when you’re buying one of their books.  I google someone new, check for abstracts of any pieces they’ve written for scholarly journals, check to see which institution their with, etc.  This isn’t to say that just because a scholar is a Christian that their writing has any religious undertones.  Bruce Metzger was a Christian, but from what I’ve read by him you’d never know it!  I’ve got a book by Prof Ehrman’s colleague Mark Goodacre and I think he’s a Christian, but this book of his that I have doesn’t have any theology.  Same with Larry Hurtado.  The really good ones can do research and write about it without bringing their personal beliefs into the mix.  Or, I suppose if they do they hide it well.

Did you enjoy Mark Goodacre’s book? I was going to look into reading one but it did not appear as though he had written many.

I do not enjoy writers who only have an interest in molding the reader, rather than presenting interesting information and thoughts

I’ve started the one I have, but haven’t finished it.  The one I have is: ** you do not have permission to see this link **.  You can read a preview of it on Amazon.

Also, he’s got a website with links to a lot of articles he’s written so if you want something less than book length these might be good for you.  Some are scholarly and others are not quite so scholarly, ie. easier to read for us laymen!  The link to his main page is: ** you do not have permission to see this link **.  Click the link for “Articles”.  For some reason, not all of his articles that are available are linked.  For example, I stumbled across his article “A World Without Q” when Googling something else, but it isn’t linked from his website.  I thoroughly enjoyed that article.
