Hello everyone,

As some of you may have heard or read at some point, there is a set of manuscripts called the f35 (family 35), that if I’m not mistaken the propagator of this theory is Dr. Wilbur Pickering. He is the author of a book titled “The Identity of the New Testament” published in 1977. He also published a book named The Greek New Testament According to Family 35″.

There is also an interesting link about a commentary on this in which you can find in here ** you do not have permission to see this link **

Please let me know what´s your thoughts and critical opinion on this.

The text and footnotes in your link to website of Edward D. Andrews is word-for-word the same as ** you do not have permission to see this link **, with exactly the same footnotes. Did Andrews also write the Wikipedia article? Or is this another instance of plagiarism?  This came up before with material on Andrews’ website. Did you ever find out who plagiarized whom in that case?

Hi Robert,

It´s been a long time my dear friend and it´s always good to hear from you.

Well I really don´t know so I would assume that he also wrote the article for Wikipedia in that case if it is word for word which seems to be. Listen, I don´t know Mr. Edward Andrews, I just know his website and I usually read his articles and I have a few books wrote by him.

Hermann von Soden identified the similarities in what is now called Family 35. Wilbur Pickering is a proponent of the Majority Text, which is rejected by all mainstream text critics.

But what is your opinion on this Family Kr (also known as Family 35)? Is this a compiled of trusted and reliable MSS? What can we know about it? Some may say that this Family Kr (also known as Family 35) is reliable in reconstructing the original NT text, which I totally doubt that (notice that I follow the text critics).

I thought you previously described Andrews as a friend of yours, maybe a Facebook friend? I recall your mentioning that you corresponded with him about the plagiarism question ** you do not have permission to see this link **.

He has a Group Discussion at Facebook called NT Textual Studies in which I also participate by posting comments, articles and etc. But I do not know him personally. And Yes, we are a Facebook friends and nothing else. Now regarding the issue of Plagiarism, that´s his problem and not mine.

It’s just a family of very late manuscripts that are closely related to each other, thus each manuscript of the family does not have any independent value.

Ok I got you but my question is whether or not this compile of MSS are reliable in reconstructing the original NT text. What´s the big deal about this compile of MSS? Are they different than others?

No more or less reliable than any other late Byzantine manuscripts, which as a class is not particularly reliable. You can think of this Byzantine class of manuscripts as the cumulative result of centuries of ‘improvement’ and standardization of the text. What a scribe introduces as an imagined or unconscious ‘improvement’ can paper over an original nuance by the original author of the text.

Thanks Robert,

Just out of curiosity. Are you a NT scholar? What´s your career and which area are you graduated at?

Scholar, no. I did do my doctoral studies in NT exegesis with additional study of Hebrew and Aramaic. My thesis was on the gospel of Mark. But I never pursued a career as an academic. Did not really seem practical at the time. As a former Franciscan, I had to make up for lost time and wanted to buy a house, get married, have kids, etc, and no longer really believed in God. Instead, I went into medical publishing based on the limited experience I already had in academic publishing. I do try to keep up on scholarship a little bit, time permitting, and hope to take up some academic interests again when I retire if I’m not completely senile by then.

Wow what experience.

Hope everything works out for you my dear friend and at least I can tell for myself that I´ve been learning a lot from you.

Take care.
