A little over 2 months ago, James White attacked David Wood quotation of Luke 23:34 “Father Forgive Them” as a variant reading of the New Testament. I was asked by Sam Shamoun to put forward of refutation of James White’s hypothesis, and document Luke 23:34 as the original reading in St Luke’s Gospel.
My current animation does a play on Charles Dickens Classic “A Christmas Carol”, recreating James White attack on David Woods’s quotation of Father Forgive Them. Thoughout the course of the animation James White is then visited by an old friend who warns him that he will be visited by three ancient witnesses, who will testify to the authenticity of Luke 23:34 as the original reading in St. Luke’s Gospel.
Please share your thoughts on my defense of this passage? Original or interpolation? Whether you agree with my historical argument, hopefully you can get a good laugh.
interesting enough, Dr Ehrman shares John Burgons view that this reading was removed from some early biblical manuscripts due to the Anti Semitism of the period.
I don’t consider myself to possess enough expertise to have an opinion. I simply note that Prof Ehrman’s view makes a lot of sense. Also the idea that Marcion made substantive cuts to the gospel of Luke has been challenged. He may simply have had access to an earlier form of the gospel which did not contain the nativity episode for example. Sure would be nice if somebody invented a time machine!
I enjoyed the video. James White is my very favorite hermetically sealed apologist fanatic and I watch him on Youtube regularly. Have you sent the video to him?
Here you go, Calvinsx76!
Response starts about 43 minutes in after a tribute to RC Sproul, the Reformed evangelist, who was recently promoted to glory. I have to admit I take a perverse pleasure in watching the believers go after each other. White laughs but he doesn’t really have any sense of humor. Satire is completely lost on him. (The very funny line about Bruce Metzger being condemned to wander through YouTube comments for all eternity flies over his head.)
