For this layman, it’s a really intriguing shift playing out – a tiny bit like watching our understanding of physics changing in real time right now.
Dr Ehrman recommended to me to read Moody Smith a while back, which I dutifully did. Excellent stuff. After reading Smith’s (physical, egad!) books, I still couldn’t shake a nagging feeling that something about the arc of John’s narrative still rang like synoptic familiarity. Hard to distinguish between common oral vs. written (but not verbatim) traditions – I’m still trying to work my way through it all. I really gotta read Dr Mendez’s actual article soon…
ETA: Ian and Laura do a great job distilling these influential works on NT Review.
