Stephen Simon Kimondo:
Jesus’ saying about the Temple being turned into a den of robbers instead of being a house for international prayer links Martk’s Gospel to the War.
Steve Campbell, author of Historical Accuracy:
…link’s Mark’s Gospel to the Jewish Civil War first and the Revolt against Rome, second.
Stephen Simon Kimondo:
Josephus frequently uses the term leston/lestes to refer to the Jewish revolutionaries and the Zealots.
Craig Evans:
See Jeremiah 7: 9 through 11
9 Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known,
10 and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My Name, and say, ‘We are delivered, so we can continue with all these abominations’?
11 Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers
Steve Campbell:
Craig can point to that but cannot ignore the connection to historical events.
Second, in churches, the turning over of the tables is about standard financial procedures at the Temple which Jesus should have known.
Third, yes it has become a den of robbers during the Jewish Civil War.
Stehen Simon Kimondo:
Craig Evans’ interpretation is lacking.
The majority of Markan scholars recognize The First Jewish-Roman War as influencing the gospel of Mark. The readers of the gospel of Mark had the freshness of the revolutionaries and the Zealots capturing the Temple, front of mind, rather than Jeremiah 7: 9 through 11.
Kimondo:
Liew argues that Mark’s Jesus imitates Roman imperial power in at least three ways:
1
absolute authority
2
Mark portrays Jesus as an eschatological judge who will annihilate all of his opponents: Mark’s Jesus mimics imperial ideology: serve or be destroyed.
3
annihilation of the wicked
everyone must submit which is Roman ideology that led to imperial oppression and suffering
How did Christianity impact South America?
Through the violence of colonization and the conquering of the New World, Latin America was brought under the influence of Christianity. Missionaries brought with them death in the form of subjugation and sickness, as well as enslavement and violent conversion.
