Apparently the 4 gospels were written by authors unknown to us in the 1st century of the CE. Yet since at least the King Jame’s Version, they are known to English readers as Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John.
Were these names translations of prior names in either Latin or Greek assigned by ancient editors ( who also did not know the true authors ), or were they assigned by authors of the KJV as convenient English names to pronounce and remember?
