Is Jesus God because people worshipped him as said in Matthew 2:2, 2:8 and 2:11?

Evangelicals refer to some verses where people are shown to “worship” Jesus e.g.

MATTHEW 2: 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” (NKJV)

MATTHEW 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.” (NKJV)

MATTHEW 2:11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. (NKJV)

They claim that because Jesus was worshipped, therefore he was God. What do the original texts translated as “worship” in NKJV read? What is the counter argument to the claim that Jesus was worshipped therefore he was God?

Who came to worship him?

The three wise men are not known to be Jews, monotheistic Jews.

Is Jesus the monotheistic God of the Jews. Answer: No.

The three wise men did not come to worship Jesus as if they were going to the Temple of Jerusalem to worship the monotheistic God of the Jews.

Their worship of Him had no bearing on Who He was. He was God Almighty even as a helpless baby.

To address the question asked, I think that the question is poorly based because the logic of it is that Jesus would have been worshiped BECAUSE he was “God”/”divine”/”god” … which assumes that one does (or ought to) “worship” ONLY divine/heavenly beings.  The word in Greek is “proskuneo” which which literally means “full bodily prostration” (re. the position/posture taken when Roman Catholic priests are ordained … or at least used to be), which signifies/signals “submission to authority,” implying readiness to obey orders.  Thus in our English tradition, to “bend the knee,” a somewhat more gentile way of signifying the same things (which does indeed raise a wry perspective these days about those who kneel when the national anthem is played and/or our flag is paraded by, by members of our military … whereas OUR practice to  signal submission is to “stand up,” which also had Brritish antecedents as in when the Queen or King enters the room … or a judge enters his court, a hold-over from the British tradition that the judge is the royal surrogate).

On the other hand, while the “wise men” (note that the text does not state their number, the number three counting their gifts) as “from the east” (and their being prompted by their “reading the stars” suggest that they were astrologists and thus likely to be seen as “magi,” Zoroastrian priests) who show up because Jesus has been born to be “king of the Jews,” not that they desire to be citizens of his kingdom for to present a gift from another jurisdiction/authority in a posture of kneeling is simply court/political protocol practiced by representatives from other political entities.  I would add a further complication/dimension in that we do find in some of the contemporary Jewish eschatologies that gentiles will arrive in Jerusalem bearing gifts when “messiah” has arrived in (or to establish!) a restored Davidic kingdom.  One thus can see this as another of that typically “Matthean” theme of “fulfilments,”  not just of “scripture” but of those texts in the “Law and the Prophets” (and “Psalms”!) that can be read as what such events herald as fraught with eschatological significance!

So in the context of this literary work (and the culture of the age in which it was written), the giving of gifts while kneeling down (not in “adoration” but  in the “recognition” of power/authority) is simply court protocol in which someone is recognizing that this child has been born to become “king of the Jews,” that “messianic/anointed/empowered Son of David” who will restore and/or rule in the restored Davidic kingdom, one freed of political submission to foreign power/states (in this case, Rome).

Having gone into  this detail, I can not stop without admitting a complication, for this “court protocol” with human kings is also the paradigm for how the priests behave in “God’s house,” which is the home/palace for the “divine king,” as in the Psalms proclamation that “The LORD God omnipotent reigneth.”  Thus, YHWH is also seen as a “king with authority,” which he can give in part or in whole to any chosen human agent, as (say) David and his heirs!  So as with the human king, YHWH is “worshiped” by “bending the knee” (if not full prostration) not because he is “God/gov/G-d” but because he is “king/emperor/lord”!

Who came to worship him? Who cares? What difference does it make?

The three wise men are not known to be Jews, monotheistic Jews. So?

Is Jesus the monotheistic God of the Jews. Answer: No. How do you know who He was?

The three wise men did not come to worship Jesus as if they were going to the Temple of Jerusalem to worship the monotheistic God of the Jews. What difference does that make?
