greetings
What was the reason for Matthew to omit taking of the spices? Tovia singer said it had something to do with taboo. could there have been another reason such as from matthew’s perspective the women dont go with spices because the women would see an angel come down and role away the stone and THEN get invited into the tomb?
matthew i think makes changes to marks account and seems to have the women encounter the angel outside of the tomb, so it would appear that from matthews modified perspective the spices would be useless?

If I recall correctly, Tovia Singer raised two issues in Mark’s account that he suggests Matthew is correcting.
First, he says there was no requirement to add spices to a dead body. Spices were only added as a practical measure to mask any smell until the body could be buried, so you would never disinter a body that was already buried to put spices on it.
Second, he says that it would be unthinkable for Jewish women to prepare a man’s body, for reasons of modesty. (On this last point, it makes sense, but I’m not certain that he is correct historically).

“For reasons of modesty. “
greetings. So acc to tovia matthew fixes a problem in mark, could there have been another reason?
Im looking at it from the perspective that in matthew the womens reason to go to the tomb is to report the “good news” and having them view the miraculous outside of the tomb.

I’m not sure I follow.
According to Singer, Matthew changes Mark by taking out some details that Singer thinks Matthew would have recognized as wildly improbable. What sort of other reason are you asking about–by which I mean, another reason for what? Mark could just as well have had the women report the good news if he’d wanted to, so I don’t see how that consideration would motivate the changes in question.

I assume that matthew thinks that mark has the women go to the tomb to put spices on the body. Matthew omits
“Who will role away the stone” and the mention of spices because matthew will not have the women enter the tomb upon their arrival. he is going to have them meet a miracle outside the tomb.
Matthew when constructing his narrative as counter to mark probably thought:
“I dont really need the spices in my retelling”
John corrects this even further.
Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
-John 19:38-40
An orthodox Jewish apologist! I suppose that was inevitable. Wow, he really hates Paul.
