AMIN | {Matthew, Luke} | 40
AMIN | {Mark, John} | 41

There are patterns in the Greek Scriptures involving the numbers 40 and 41. These patterns prove the Divine Inspiration of The Scriptures. The New Testament text is the 1904 Patriarchal Text which is the official Greek New Testament Text of the Orthodox Church.

The number 40 occurs many times throughout the Scriptures, primarily in the context of time: 40 days or 40 years. The number 40 points to the Mystery of The Incarnation: 40 weeks.

The pair {40, 41} correspond to the number of calendar weeks from The Feast of Annunciation to the Nativity. If Annunciation happens on Friday or Saturday then there are 41 calendar weeks, else there are 40 calendar weeks.

Here are the first three examples of the pattern. These three all have value 40.

Pattern 1: ‘EGO EIMI’ (I AM) spoken by God in the New Testament | 40
Pattern 2: ‘PROSUKNEO’ (Worship) in the context of the Worship of God | 40
Pattern 3: ONOMA (Name) in the context of the Name of God | {Matthew, Mark, Luke} | 40

A few of the patterns are posted on my website: ** you do not have permission to see this link **

It helps to go through them in the order they are posted as some of the later patterns build on the previous ones.

This pattern begins in Genesis One (Septuagint). For example here is the Greek translated into English:

Genesis One | References to God | 41

1 In the beginning [God 1] made the heaven and the earth. 2 But the earth was unsightly and unfurnished, and darkness was over the deep, and [The Spirit of God 2] moved over the water. 3 And [God 3] said, Let there be light, and there was light. 4 And [God 4] saw the light that it was good, and [God 5] divided between the light and the darkness. 5 And [God 6] called the light Day, and the darkness [He 7] called Night, and there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6 And [God 8] said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, and let it be a division between water and water, and it was so. 7 And [God 9] made the firmament, and [God 10] divided between the water which was under the firmament and the water which was above the firmament. 8 And [God 11] called the firmament Heaven, and [God 12] saw that it was good, and there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9 And [God 13] said, Let the water which is under the heaven be collected into one place, and let the dry land appear, and it was so. And the water which was under the heaven was collected into its places, and the dry land appeared. 10 And [God 14] called the dry land Earth, and the gatherings of the waters [He 15] called Seas, and [God 16] saw that it was good. 11 And [God 17] said, Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass bearing seed according to its kind and according to its likeness, and the fruit-tree bearing fruit whose seed is in it, according to its kind on the earth, and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth the herb of grass bearing seed according to its kind and according to its likeness, and the fruit tree bearing fruit whose seed is in it, according to its kind on the earth, and [God 18] saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14 And [God 19] said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, to divide between day and night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and for years. 15 And let them be for light in the firmament of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth, and it was so. 16 And [God 20] made the two great lights, the greater light for regulating the day and the lesser light for regulating the night, the stars also. 17 And [God 21] placed them in the firmament of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth, 18 and to regulate day and night, and to divide between the light and the darkness. And [God 22] saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20 And [God 23] said, Let the waters bring forth living (psuchon zoson) reptiles, and winged creatures flying above the earth in the firmament of heaven, and it was so. 21 And [God 24] made great whales, and every living (psuchen zoon) reptile, which the waters brought forth according to their kinds, and every creature that flies with wings according to its kind, and [God 25] saw that they were good. 22 And [God 26] blessed them saying, Increase and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the creatures that fly be multiplied on the earth. 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24 And [God 27] said, Let the earth bring forth the living soul (psuchen zosan) according to its kind, quadrupeds and reptiles and wild beasts of the earth according to their kind, and it was so. 25 And [God 28] made the wild beasts of the earth according to their kind, and cattle according to their kind, and all the reptiles of the earth according to their kind, and [God 29] saw that they were good. 26 And [God 30] said, Let [Us 31] make man according to [Our 32] image and likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of heaven, and over the cattle and all the earth, and over all the reptiles that creep on the earth. 27 And [God 33] made man, according to the image of [God 34] [He 35] made him, male and female [He 36] made them. 28 And [God 37] blessed them, saying, Increase and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the seas and flying creatures of heaven, and all the cattle and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep on the earth. 29 And [God 38] said, Behold [I 39] have given to you every seed-bearing herb sowing seed which is upon all the earth, and every tree which has in itself the fruit of seed that is sown, to you it shall be for food. 30 And to all the wild beasts of the earth, and to all the flying creatures of heaven, and to every reptile creeping on the earth, which has in itself the soul of life, even every green plant for food; and it was so. 31 And [God 40] saw all the things that [He 41] had made, and, behold, they were very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

If you count the verbs, again the value is 41:

1 In the beginning God [made 1] the heaven and the earth. 2 But the earth was unsightly and unfurnished, and darkness was over the deep, and The Spirit of God [moved 2] over the water. 3 And God [said 3], Let there be light, and there was light. 4 And God [saw 4] the light that it was good, and God [divided 5] between the light and the darkness. 5 And God [called 6] the light Day, and the darkness He [called 7] Night, and there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6 And God [said 8], Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, and let it be a division between water and water, and it was so. 7 And God [made 9] the firmament, and God [divided 10] between the water which was under the firmament and the water which was above the firmament. 8 And God [called 11] the firmament Heaven, and God [saw 12] that it was good, and there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9 And God [said 13], Let the water which is under the heaven be collected into one place, and let the dry land appear, and it was so. And the water which was under the heaven was collected into its places, and the dry land appeared. 10 And God [called 14] the dry land Earth, and the gatherings of the waters He [called 15] Seas, and God [saw 16] that it was good. 11 And God [said 17], Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass bearing seed according to its kind and according to its likeness, and the fruit-tree bearing fruit whose seed is in it, according to its kind on the earth, and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth the herb of grass bearing seed according to its kind and according to its likeness, and the fruit tree bearing fruit whose seed is in it, according to its kind on the earth, and God [saw 18] that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 14 And God [said 19], Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, to divide between day and night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and for years. 15 And let them be for light in the firmament of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth, and it was so. 16 And God [made 20] the two great lights, the greater light for regulating the day and the lesser light for regulating the night, the stars also. 17 And God [placed 21] them in the firmament of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth, 18 and to regulate day and night, and to divide between the light and the darkness. And God [saw 22] that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20 And God [said 23], Let the waters bring forth living (psuchon zoson) reptiles, and winged creatures flying above the earth in the firmament of heaven, and it was so. 21 And God [made 24] great whales, and every living (psuchen zoon) reptile, which the waters brought forth according to their kinds, and every creature that flies with wings according to its kind, and God [saw 25] that they were good. 22 And God [blessed 26] them [saying 27], Increase and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the creatures that fly be multiplied on the earth. 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24 And God [said 28], Let the earth bring forth the living soul (psuchen zosan)  according to its kind, quadrupeds and reptiles and wild beasts of the earth according to their kind, and it was so. 25 And God [made 29] the wild beasts of the earth according to their kind, and cattle according to their kind, and all the reptiles of the earth according to their kind, and God [saw 30] that they were good. 26 And God [said 31], Let Us [make 32] man according to Our image and likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the flying creatures of heaven, and over the cattle and all the earth, and over all the reptiles that creep on the earth. 27 And God [made 33] man, according to the image of God He [made 34] him, male and female He [made 35] them. 28 And God [blessed 36] them, [saying 37], Increase and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the seas and flying creatures of heaven, and all the cattle and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep on the earth. 29 And God [said 38], Behold I have [given 39] to you every seed-bearing herb sowing seed which is upon all the earth, and every tree which has in itself the fruit of seed that is sown, to you it shall be for food. 30 And to all the wild beasts of the earth, and to all the flying creatures of heaven, and to every reptile creeping on the earth, which has in itself the breath of life, even every green plant for food; and it was so. 31 And God [saw 40] all the things that He had [made 41], and, behold, they were very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

e1. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for The Child; and when ye have found Him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship Him also. Matthew 2 verse 8

(Here Pontius Pilate feigns that he desires to worship Christ)

e2. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped Him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Thou Son of The Most High God? I adjure thee by God, that Thou torment me not. Mark 5: verses 6,7

(The demoniac is possessed by a legion of demons)

e3. And they smote Him on the Head with a reed, and did spit upon Him, and bowing their knees worshipped Him. Mark 15 verse 19

’23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship The Father in Spirit and in Truth: for The Father seeketh such to worship Him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth’ – John 4

The word ‘PROSKUNEO’ is the *primary Greek word* which is used to denote WORSHIP in The Orthodox Church.

It is the specific word the Fathers of The Second Ecumenical Council used to denote the WORSHIP of The Triune God in The Confession of Faith.

‘And in The Holy Spirit, The Lord, The Giver of life, who Proceeds from The Father, who with The Father and The Son together is Worshiped and Glorified, who spoke by the prophets’ – Nicene Constantinopolitan Creed

Rather, God Inspired The Holy Ecumenical Councils of The Orthodox Church as He Inspired The Holy Scriptures and Worship of The Orthodox Church.

King David | Four Gospels | 40 Instances

There are 40 references to King David in the Four Gospels {Matthew, Mark, Luke, John}.
Note that 39 of these instances contain the name ‘David’. One instance (#7) is a typological reference which refers to David as the ‘the Great King’ (Matt. 5:35)

1. The Book of The Generation of Jesus Christ, ~ Son of [David 1], ~ Son of Abraham. Matthew 1:1

2, 3. And Jesse begat [David 2] the king; and [David 3] the king begat Solomon from her ~ of Uriah; Matthew 1:6

4, 5. So all the generations from Abraham to [David 4] are fourteen generations; and from [David 5] until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto The Christ are fourteen generations. Matthew 1:17

7. Nor by the earth; for it is His footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of [the Great King 7]. Matthew 5:35

The Holy Scriptures distinguish between the earthly Jerusalem and the Heavenly. The earthly Jerusalem which is referred to as the City of David is a TYPE (as in typology) of the Heavenly Jerusalem and David himself typologizes Christ Who is The Son of David.

8. And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed Him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of [David 8], have mercy on us. Matthew 9:27

9. But He said unto them, Have ye not read what [David 9] did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; Matthew 12:3

10. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this The Son of [David 10]? Matthew 12:23

17. He saith unto them, How then doth [David 17] in Spirit call Him Lord, saying, Matthew 22:43

18. If [David 18] then call Him Lord, how is He his Son? Matthew 22:45

19. And He said unto them, Have ye never read what [David 19] did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? Mark 2:25

20. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, Thou Son of [David 20], have mercy on me. Mark 10:47

38. [David 38] therefore calleth him Lord, how is He then his Son? Luke 20:44

39, 40. Hath not The Scripture said, That Christ cometh of The Seed of [David 39], and out of the town of Bethlehem, where [David 40] was? John 7:42

Notes.

(7) The Great King is of course The Lord Himself – but we observe here two Typologies: [1] that between King David and Christ who is of the Seed of David who David calls Lord and is The King of kings, and [2] that of the Earthly Jerusalem which is repeatedly called the ‘City of David’ in the Holy Scriptures, and the Heavenly Jerusalem which is from above. ’25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.’ – Galatians 4

I already gave one explanation for counting specifically the word PROSKUNEO – namely that it is the primary word used in the Greek for referring to the Church’s Worship of God.

As far as your second question about scope, you need to see several of the patterns for it to (hopefuly) make better sense. For example, compare the previous one ‘Cross & Crucify’ | Four Gospels to this:

Crucify | New Testament | 40

1. And shall deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to [crucify 1] Him: and the third day He shall Rise again. Matthew 20:19

2. Ye know that after two days is The Pascha, and The Son of man is betrayed to be [crucified 2]. Matthew 26:2

3. Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let Him be [crucified 3]. Matthew 27:22

4. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath He done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let Him be [crucified 4]. Matthew 27:23

5. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be [crucified 5]. Matthew 27:26

6. And after that they had mocked Him, they took the robe off from Him, and put His own raiment on Him, and led him away to [crucify 6] Him. Matthew 27:31

7. And they [crucified 7] Him, and parted His garments, casting lots {~}. Matthew 27:35

8. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was [crucified 8]. Matthew 28:5

9. And they cried out again, [Crucify 9] Him. Mark 15:13

10. Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath He done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, [Crucify 10] Him. Mark 15:14

11. And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged Him, to be [crucified 11]. Mark 15:15

12. And when they had mocked Him, they took off the purple from Him, and put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to [crucify 12] Him. Mark 15:20

13. And when they had [crucified 13] Him, they parted His garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. Mark 15:24

14. And it was the third hour, and they [crucified 14] Him. Mark 15:25

15. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was [crucified 15]: He Is Risen; He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him. Mark 16:6

16. But they cried, saying, [Crucify, crucify 16] Him. Luke 23:21

17. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that He might be [crucified 17]. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. Luke 23:23

18. And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they [crucified 18] Him, and the malefactors, one on the right, and the other on the left. Luke 23:33

20. And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and have [crucified 20] Him. Luke 24:20

21, 22. When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, [Crucify, crucify 21] Him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and [crucify 22] Him: for I find no fault in Him. John 19:6

23. Then saith Pilate unto Him, Speakest Thou not unto me? knowest Thou not that I have authority to [crucify 23] Thee, and have authority to release Thee? John 19:10

27. Where they [crucified 27] Him, and two others with Him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. John 19:18

32. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have [crucified 32], both Lord and Christ. Acts 2:36

33. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by The Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Whom ye [crucified 33], Whom God raised from the dead, even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole. Acts 4:10

Oops, 42 not 40. You left out two uses of σταυρόω in Galatians:

Sorry, should have clarified – we are counting “crucify” specifically in the context of the Lord’s crucifixion.

Galatians 5:24 and Galatians 6:14 are both speaking about the passions which the Christian must crucify in the flesh.
