5If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.

is this an anachronism in matthew?

The Greek used is EKKLESIA which is normally translated as “the church”, but it literally means an assembly or group.  I think the use of the word “church” here is opportunistic by most translators.  Given the context the word should be more properly translated as the general group of believers in my opinion.  Some might say it can mean the local synagogue, but another word is used to mean synagogue elsewhere in the NT.

i am still confused.

you said “an assemble” but is there a definite article which precedes the EKKLESIA?

How does that change anything?  If Matthew meant it to be THE ekklesia or AN ekklesia does that change anything?  Is it anachronistic?
