The Nazareth Inscription or Nazareth decree is a marble tablet inscribed in Greek with an edict from an unnamed Caesar ordering capital punishment for anyone caught disturbing graves or tombs. It is dated on the basis of epigraphy to the first half of the 1st century AD.

The Nazareth Inscription could be a penalty against anyone else stealing a body because there will be Roman propaganda about an empty tomb of a peaceful Jewish Messiah. The Nazareth Inscription does not have to refer to an earlier empty tomb when Pilate was Roman governor over Judea.

At 26:30, the video provokes the idea that Jesus was from Sepphoris or made reference to it.

High priests were anointed messianic figures.

I did not know that. I would like to see evidence of that or see the argument for that.

High priests were anointed.

Exodus 28: 41, 30: 30

Leviticus 7: 36, 10: 7

Numbers 3: 3

Steefen
I would hope high priests supported the Messiah, unlike what happened with the Biblical Jesus.

Isn’t it just a bit dishonest to take on the persona of an educated authority to discuss the NT when your doctorate is in a complerely unrelated field?  Dr Williams is presumably an expert in mass communications. In the specialized field of NT his opinion has no more weight than mine. But then I never flash my credentials. Why does he?

Leave it to me to rescue the forum threads from low value / no value posts such as the one above.

No, it is not dishonest.

The host for the show introduced Dr. Luther G. Williams first as a guest with a doctorate degree and second as a person who has researched the Bible for more than 20 years. Dr. Williams is going through the endeavor of pulling his 20+ years of research into a book. Writing a book and doing interviews is a test of one’s views worth having to “sharpen the saw.”

Focus on the first century

Focus on Emperor Claudius

Focus on the Nazareth Inscription – it is a capital offense to remove a dead body from a tomb

Was it written in response to Jesus’s resurrection?

Matthew 28: 11-15

The Jewish authorities came up with the idea to blame the disciples for removing Jesus’s dead body from his tomb.

The edict on the Nazareth Inscription came before the biblical Jesus during the reign of Tiberius
or
The edict on the Nazareth Inscription came after the biblical Jesus under Caligula? under Claudius? under Nero?

Wikipedia entry for “Nazareth Inscription”

The inscription is of interest to some authors for its indirect relationship to the historicity of Jesus, even though the text contains no reference to Jesus of Nazareth. A 2020 study of the marble’s isotopes showed that the tablet came from a quarry in the Greek island of Kos, casting much doubt on the theory that it has any relationship to Jesus, and it may instead have been inscribed as a reaction to the desecration of the grave of the Kos tyrant Nikias circa 20 BCE.

Luther says a Jesus and disciples in the late 20s / early 30s are characters of historical fiction.

Luther
Jewish rebels did make heroes out of their martyrs.

Look at the Gabriel Revelation on the Jeselsohn Stone in relation to the three rebels of the tax revolt, late in the first decade of the first century.
