It seems there is a consensus among scholars that certain books of the Bible are pseudepigrapha, ie. not written by who they claim to be written by and therefore lacking the authority they might have if they were actually written by someone like Paul or whoever. Do churches acknowledge this scholarship and disregard those books in any way? Or do they feel compelled to defend the authority of those books since they have already been included in the Bible?
Anyone who’s been to any reputable seminary or university will be aware. I don’t think most folks in the pews even know it’s an issue. Ministers don’t want to open a can of worms so they don’t bring it up. Fundamentalists dismiss it all as “liberal” scholarship. I’m not aware of anyone who’s considered the forgeries in the Bible as devalued because of it.
