I’m traveling hither and yon over the next couple of months giving lectures on a variety of topics. Right now I’m in Kansas City, near my old stompling grounds of Lawrence Kansas, to give two lectures at the annual Lyceum conference at Unity Village. It’s an unusual place, the center of a religious organization (denomination? They debate how to describe themselves apparently; but they are two million strong around the world), known as Unity. The people here are spectacularly friendly and helpful; I would say that their religious views are very, very far to the left of the spectrum; their group began as a New Thought movement in the 1880s, influenced by Transcendentalism among other things, highly spiritual and as far from doctrinally oriented as can be. For anyone interested, here is their website: http://www.unity.org/
In any event, Unity Village is a beautiful campus in a rural setting. The Lyceum is their annual conference which is put on every five years. I was a speaker at their first Lyceum in 2008, and they asked me back to give the key note again, tonight.
So I’ll be giving a talk on the use of forgery in Early Christianity – not the topic I’m the hottest on right now, of course, as I’m writing How Jesus Became God. But the question of forgery occupied me for several years until my scholarly book on it showed up some months ago. So it’s still fresh in my mind.

Now reading your Forgery and Counterforgery. Gave your trade book Forged to my brother in law.
I think your scholarly stuff is interesting.
Please let us know haw it goes. I have some familiarity and affinity with Unity and I think you have much to share with them.
I hear the unity village is beautiful. I almost stayed there the last time I was in Kansas City. As a KU alum, I’ve spent a lot of time in Kansas City. Hell, when I was a fundy, I even was enrolled for a little bit at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where you’ve conducted at least one debate against Mike Licona. I mean no disrespect to Mike Licona, but each time you’ve debated him, you’ve made him look REALLY foolish. You put a clown suit on him every time.
Bart, when I got a question. I know you were recently in Chicago for SBL but is there any chance of you coming to The Windy City to give a presentation, talk or whatever in the near future? Here’s something to consider. If you ever make it to Chicago for any reason, I would be happy to treat you to drinks and all you can eat deep dish Chicago style pizza. How does that sound?
I hope someone can post them to youtube.
I thought I read that Steven Pinker is putting out a book on this subject.
1. Your New Testament textbook is really special both in content and in format with all of the highlight boxes. I wish they wrote medical school textbooks with such a format of highlight boxes.
2. There is a special BBQ place in Kansas City, but I cannot recall the name of it right now. I probably will recall it later.
3. These anecdotes from your life provide interesting breaks from the Christology. Have a good trip.
The name of the BBQ place in Kansas City is Arthur Bryant’s BBQ and it is located at the corner of 18th and Brooklyn.
I am familiar with the Unity Church and it is hard to classify it among other churches except that it is certainly on the liberal end of the spectrum..
Yup, I’ve eaten at Bryant’s. But it’s been years.
I LOVE Arthur Bryant’s!!!! It’s the best BBQ joint in Kansas City, in my humble opinion at least!
Communicate ― Entertain ― Engage
Easier said than . . . . . well, you know?
How does an annual conference only happen every five years? 😉
Sorry, you lost me. What are you referring to?
In the second paragraph of this post, you say “The Lyceum is their annual conference which is put on every five years.” Reference to the conference as “annual,” and that it is put on every five years … ?
Wow. I must have been really tired! yes, it’s an annual conference and yes, as a result, it meets every year! 🙂
