in the bible the only exception for divorce was adultery.
since the gospels are about suffering, turning the other cheek and enduring persecution till the end, how did abused christian women in first century get out of abusive marriage ? i don’t think that option was available, right? what could the woman have done? pray for her husband who persecutes her? turn the other cheek? how did mark 8:31-38 work in an abusive marriage? women just accepted the abuse?
Jesus and his early followers were apocalypticists who expected an imminent Kingdom where all the world’s ills would be swept away. This meant that some social issues just never came up. The real problem though is that Jesus’ ethics only make sense in that context. So to take Jesus’ ethics and try to apply them on a practical basis to society for the long term doesn’t work.
