Several sources state that Paul’s letters (e.g. Phillipians) paste a poem that dates way back to the years 33-35 or so.
The evidence that these are poems that he pasted seems clear, and Professor Ehrman has explained them on this site.
But, what is the evidence that they go so far back to within 3-5 years of the crucifixion?
Thanks.
I suspect Philippians 2 encapsulates ideas that Paul might have brought with him to the faith from his own pre-conversion Jewish apocalyticism. Now he applies these pre-existing (pardon the pun) concepts to Christ. This is a underappreciated idea I think. Everything in the NT didn’t have to originate with Christianity. One can easily imagine some believer hearing an admirable saying or story and importing that and applying it to Jesus.
