I just watched the comedy Wag The Dog with excellent performances by Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro, which I mention because they inspired me to write this note. Especially the “This is nothing” part at 1:37:00. The alleged war invented by them has been publicly deleted by the CIA and the gentlemen move on to the next idea. Since “War is over”, now it’s time for “Hero”.

Marcion has his hero, who is the Great Apostle, a great writer with an impressive body of work. He was the first to appropriate Paul by elevating him and his letters to the level of authority.

The other side, the Roman commune in conflict with Marcion, missed this character and this must be remedied by creating more heroes and writers. The authors of the letters and gospels (so far anonymous) and, above all, disciples of Jesus or disciples of Jesus’ disciples. Attempts are made both, to discredit Paul as an apostle of heretics (Tertullian), and to synchronize him with the disciples of Jesus (Acts).
Peter had to die in Rome because death in Jerusalem would be useless.

The fate of Paul was similar. He died in Rome in front of the emperor, as the author of Paul’s Acts showed.
