The God of Moses (Yahweh) and Moses were flat-earthers (given Genesis 1: 6).
Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521) was a Portuguese explorer who is credited with masterminding the first expedition (8/1519-9/1522) to circumnavigate the world.
Circumnavigation ends acceptance of flat-earth.
In the movie Agora (2009) there was a scene where Hypatia (died 415 AD), astronomer, was looking at a model of round planets.
Around 350 BCE, Aristotle declared the Earth was a sphere.
The Septuagint may have been completed in 247 BCE but they left flat-earth language in Genesis.
Do you think Jesus went with Moses (making Jesus a flat-earther) or Aristotle on the shape of the Earth?
We cannot have God and Jesus who became God being flat-earthers.

Interesting thread.
The Enoch material is extremely conservative, holding on as it does to a lot of old ideas. Including the ancient three tiered-cosmos. Heaven above, a disk shaped earth, and the underworld below. All surrounded by primordial chaos clearly aching to get in. One of the Enoch books has come to be named

or, the Book of the Luminaries. it describes in mind numbing detail the motions of the Sun and Moon both above and below a flat earth. It is batsh*t crazy in a completely wonderful way. They really thought this thing through! Imagine competing sects whose bone of contention is whether to use a solar calendar or a lunar calendar! Who needs fantasy novels? It is a historical and literary tragedy that the Books of Enoch were excluded from the western canon. Think how much funkier the last two thousand years could have been?
There are strange hints and references in the New Testament. During the Temptation accounts the Devil takes Jesus up on top of a high mountain to see all the kingdoms of the earth. Perplexing episode if the earth is a sphere!
And during the Ascension Jesus is wafted away into the clouds. In the ancient cosmos Heaven is, you know…up.
I would have thought that as a part of their education the literate authors of the gospels would also have been taught the latest Greek science, but who knows? As I said the apocalyptic genre was extremely conservative of traditions.
