I’ll be in Waynesville NC next week and would love to have a blog dinner with anyone who can make it, on the evening of Tuesday May 19. Interested?

Bart, I live in Asheville and could possibly come to Waynesville on the 19th. Would love to continue the conversation we started at your book event at Malaprop’s. But it’s a tad late as I’d have to drive back. Would starting around 6 work for you? Let me know your thoughts. David Ourisman
I hear you. Please write a note to the email address so we can deal with it there.

Gee I’d almost drive down to NC for that if I didn’t have my kiddo and didn’t have a whole life, etc. What a generous offer!
I wish I was nearby, would’ve loved to join. Perhaps you can visit South Florida in the near future! Enjoy your dinner. You made me laugh with the free egestion!
If you ever come to Tokyo, I would be delighted to treat you to dinner at a good izakaya.
Even if we assume the existence of Q, is it still possible that Luke knew Matthew directly? If so, I wonder how that possibility would affect discussions about the infancy narratives in Luke.
Since you have discussed the possibility that Luke 1–2 may be a later addition, I wonder whether an editor or redactor who inserted those chapters might have known Matthew and been influenced by Matthew’s birth narrative.
On the other hand, if such a redactor did not know Matthew, would that suggest that traditions about Jesus’ birth were already circulating independently in oral tradition, rather than being simply Matthew’s own literary creation?
Yes, it’s possible that Luke knew Matthew if Q existed. I don’t know what a good argument for it would be though.
Whoever wrote Luke 1-2 seems not to have been influenced by Matthew much at all. The major themes are similar (Bethlehem, Virgin, etc.) but the stories are all different and there are not any extensive verbatim agreements. My view is that anyone who claims one text was the source of another bears a burden of proof, and rough similarities in basic themes is not sufficient.
Bart would you ever do an international tour ? Love the chance to see you in New Zealand.
I go where I’m asked. 🙂
i’m on the mainland, manhattan for a bit. wishing you get to do a talk or visit here 🤞
