Metatron sounds like a Marvel comics superhero.  He is the divinized Enoch, the “Second Yahweh”.  The etymology of the name is not at all clear. There are several theories.  Scholar Andrei Orlov has a good discussion in a chapter from one of his books.  Readers with some Hebrew or Greek might be especially interested.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church includes the Book of Enoch as part of its canon and I was informed by a person raised in the tradition that Metatron appears most often as a Threshold Guardian in their churches.  One must endure his scrutinizing gaze before entering the sanctuary.  (So purify your heart.)

Poor Enoch/Metatron.  He has been got at by the occultists and the ancient aliens crowd.   You must wade through a sea of rubbish to find the “good part”.  But if you have the patience to do so you find the “good part” is infinitely weirder than the annunaki crystal power crap.   I do wonder sometimes though if there’s a deliberate strategy at work.    Perhaps the mounds of hoo-doo are generated intentionally by Mysterious Adepts to chase off the foolhardy and the easily distracted and the spiritually immature.  Perhaps a path is being cleared for the True Seeker to penetrate to the Heart of Things.  Sounds good to me.

Wow that channel has a million subscribers!  Sadly though, despite the name, it’s not about Jewish mysticism but all over the place.  I did get interested when I saw a posted video about the Hittites, a civilization I’ve grown fascinated by over the last couple years.  (They have a cool mythology. Full of Rock Giants and Gods who get pissed off and go hide.)  Unfortunately for the guy who runs the channel he referenced the book he’s getting all his info from early in his video, and being one of the dwindling number of folk who privileges the text, I wrote down the title and author, and left Video Metatron to his own devices.   

Here’s a video by a guy whose work I do respect and who does spend a lot of time discussing Jewish mysticism.  It concerns the 3rd Book of Enoch, not part of my Enoch thread but very very interesting.  Part of the Hekhalot literature/Merkabah mysticism.

ps: With the increase of non-skippable adverts and their random placement within the videos, The YouTube is getting harder and harder to tolerate for any length of time.   I’m much more likely to give it up altogether than pay money for unobstructed viewing.  Add blockers require constant management.  I’d rather spend that time reading. If YouTube would do the right thing and confine the commercials to the beginning and end of the videos I wouldn’t have a problem.  But of course the strategy is to annoy you to the point that you’ll subscribe.  Unfortunately when I’m annoyed I have a problem with rewarding the annoying party.  I just walk away.
