While there have certainly been devastating  environmental catastrophies in the past, that’s not what Noah’s Flood is all about. There it’s not simply a matter of rising waters and storms. The waters of Primordial Chaos are released through the Firmament and the disk of the Earth is covered in an Uncreation of the World.  This is Myth. Not History.

Bart was talking about Atrahasis in his post, not Noah.

Ok but it’s the same mythic complex.   To associate these stories with historical occurrences simply misses the point.

Lee Strobel throws down the gauntlet. Steve Campbell has to deal with this.

Steefen:

Okay, I’ll look at it.

YouTube Channel: Truth Verdict is homework for those who find problems with Christianity and the Bible.

It’s also homework for the topic of suffering, which is the topic Bart brought up.

This might strengthen my 2% for the Bible and Jesus or my 98% against the Bible and Jesus.

No it doesn’t: people can look for a geological confirmation.

Comment 64 and 65 should go to the thread

Correct me if I’m mistaken, but none of the flood examples you go on the to describe people provide geological evidence that any one flood covered the entire earth. Correct?

What?
Maybe you’re saying this:
None of the flood examples described provide geological evidence that a flood covered the entire earth.

Yes, that’s exactly what I meant, and I think it is also exactly what Bart was referring to with “any such thing,” ie, any geological evidence of a flood that covered the entire earth.
I don’t disagree that locals may have experienced some of these  catastrophic floods as presumably covering the entire earth, but there’s no geological evidence of any such thing.

“Scientific evidence suggests that Earth was completely covered by a global ocean about 3 to 4 billion years ago.”

There is more reason to comment against “no geological evidence of the earth being covered by water.”

Sure, humans were not around 3 to 4 billion years ago but no geological evidence for ANY SUCH THING needs an elaboration of clarification. “Covering the entire earth, but there’s no geological evidence” needs an elaboration of thorough clarification.

When a god is a local god and not a global god, that god’s whole territory can have all humans in that locale wiped out. Second, the whole globe was once completely covered by water in some form (ice, liquid, maybe gas). Geology does speak for ANY such thing.

I was never comfortable with Matthew LaCroix constantly saying the Younger Dryas when speaking about Flood accounts because it was what was after the Younger Dryas that brought the water.

Yes, scientific evidence suggests that Earth was completely covered by a global ocean about 3 to 4 billion years ago. [** you do not have permission to see this link **]
The Early Water World
  • Global Ocean: Scientists found that early Earth likely had no large continents protruding above the surface.
  • Heavy Oxygen: Ancient rock samples show high levels of oxygen-18 isotopes, which points to a complete lack of dry land and soil.
  • Deep Seas: Water may have covered the globe with oceans that were significantly deeper than they are today. [** you do not have permission to see this link **]

Where Did the Water Go?
  • Mantle Storage: The rocky mantle layer was much hotter on early Earth and could not store water inside its mineral structures.
  • Rock Absorption: As the planet slowly cooled down, the mantle absorbed massive amounts of water deep underground.
  • Land Emergence: This drop in surface water volume allowed the first landmasses and continents to finally rise above the water. [** you do not have permission to see this link **]

Then take what Bart says, hook, line, and sinker.
